Look up! Look way up! You may spot a pair of parrots collecting sticks throughout the Amazon Gallery, working on their nest. These are the monk parakeets, Queso and Salsa. They can be distinguished from the other parrot species in this Gallery, the green-cheeked conures, by looking at their larger size and their feather coloration. Both Queso and Salsa have grey faces and bellies, along with green backs and tails, and blue flight feathers.

Monk parakeets are one of only two parrot species that do not nest in holes. This species prefers the life of a master architect, building their own nest from sturdy sticks. Often, these nests are built by a community of parakeet pairs, all building the same structure in which each pair has their own living quarters. Think of it as a parrot apartment building.

This species is frequently found in the pet trade, but it’s important to note that all parrots are wild animals, and as a result do not make an ideal pet for most people. They are loud and messy, while also requiring specific diets and veterinary care.

Go fly by the Amazon Gallery to find them.
