The Vancouver Aquarium is not only Canada's largest aquarium, but a global leader in ocean conservation, animal care, and marine science. For more than six decades, we’ve connected people of all ages with the wonders of the ocean—through immersive exhibits, up-close animal experiences, and engaging education programs. Every visit supports groundbreaking research and vital conservation efforts, helping to protect ocean life and empower future generations to care for our blue planet.
The Vancouver Aquarium was founded in 1951 as the Vancouver Public Aquarium Association and officially opened its doors on June 15, 1956—becoming Canada’s first public aquarium. Since then, we’ve grown into a world-renowned institution, inspiring generations of visitors with the wonders of the ocean. Today, there are roughly 48 aquariums in North America, only a handful of which are in Canada, and more than 200 worldwide—underscoring the Aquarium’s role as a pioneer in marine education, research, and conservation.
From the very beginning, the Vancouver Aquarium has been guided by a commitment to the highest standards of animal care and a mission to create engaging, educational experiences for every visitor. Our dedication to excellence has earned us historic milestones: in 1975, we became the first aquarium accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA); in 1987, we received accreditation from Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) and were officially designated Canada’s Pacific National Aquarium by the federal government. Continuing our leadership in animal welfare, the Vancouver Aquarium was among the first in the world to achieve Humane Certification from American Humane in 2016. These principles continue to shape everything we do—from conservation and research to inspiring guests to connect with and protect the wonders of the ocean.
The Vancouver Aquarium is internationally recognized for its excellence in exhibits and interpretation, pioneering the use of professional naturalists and interpretive specialists to help visitors understand animal behavior. Our world-renowned Marine Mammal Rescue Program has set a global standard in rehabilitation and care. Through innovative programming and exceptional animal care, Vancouver Aquarium continues to inspire, educate, and lead in marine conservation year after year.
In 2017, the Ocean Wise Conservation Association (Ocean Wise) was established as a global non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans. In the spring of 2021, following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, ownership of the Vancouver Aquarium transitioned to Herschend Family Enterprises. Ocean Wise remains an independent charitable organization, and its vital work in conservation and education continues to be supported by the aquarium through an annual donation of 1% of gross profits, ensuring that our shared mission to safeguard marine life endures.
The Vancouver Aquarium is committed to leading in environmental sustainability. From reducing waste and conserving energy to sourcing responsibly, we aim to minimize our impact while inspiring visitors and our community to protect our oceans and the life within them.
