New focus on place-based learning

Few places in the world’s oceans have the abundance and diversity of marine life that we have here in our own backyard. Research in Action tells the story of fish research in Howe Sound and how it is rooted in observations and initiative. Through developing observation skills and curiosity, our hope is to learn more about the world around us, notice when things change, and be empowered to keep our ecosystems healthy.

In this program, your students will:

  • Learn a basic history of rockfish conservation in Howe Sound based on a leading researcher's experiences
  • Gain a better appreciation of our relationship to our local ecosystems
  • Understand how observations and effective conservation measures are intimately linked
  • Examine two case studies: the Rockfish Abundance Survey & Internal Anatomy (herring dissection)

NOTE: This program includes a guided dissection of a herring. Please consider preparing your class and chaperones by looking over our dissection worksheets.

Fee Information

$15 per Student

One teacher/chaperone is admitted free for every five booked students.
A 25% deposit is required to make a booking.

Class Size

Classes require a minimum of 20 students to register. The maximum capacity of the class is limited to 32 students.

Grade 4
