Saltwater Fish
What type of HABITAT do saltwater
fish need?
Saltwater
fish obviously need an aquarium, but that’s not all!
The size of the tank is directly related to how many fish
you plan to have AND the species that you intend to keep.
Different species grow to different sizes and have different
territorial needs. For example, Damsel fish don’t
require a very large tank when they are young, however,
as they get older they become very territorial and need
more space. As well, Clownfish don’t get too large
but you need a large aquarium if you plan to have a community
tank. Be sure to research the specific needs of the particular
species of fish that you want to keep!
Most fish require some type of gravel substrate
which introduces cleaning issues. You will need to clean
the substrate with a special gravel vacuum cleaner.
Plants, coral rocks and/or other types of
hiding places will give your fish the privacy and security
that they may require. These enriching additions are an
important part of the health-care plan for your pet.
Algae may be an important factor in the
balance of your aquarium, but rapid growth can create water
quality concerns as well as esthetic issues. An algae scraper
can be used to remove excess algae, or you may introduce
algae eaters, such as snails. Remember to make sure that
the animal you choose to introduce is compatible with the
pets you already have!
Water quality is an extremely important
and delicate part of a home aquarium. Filtration systems
with replacement filters, special solutions to balance the
chemistry of the water and water quality test kits (hydrometer,
pH, nitrate) are all essential tools for saltwater aquarium
care.
A special lighting system, water heater
and a thermometer are also tools that will help create and
maintain the best environment for your pets.
What do saltwater fish EAT?
Different fish require different types and
amounts of food. Research the specific food requirements
for the fish you plan to buy BEFORE making any purchases.
Some fish eat flakes or pellets while others can be dependent
on live food!
How long do saltwater fish LIVE?
The life-span depends on the type of fish.
Some species can live up to 12-15 years.
How much do saltwater fish COST
to keep as pets?
The specific costs depend on what type of
fish you buy, but an aquarium with lights, heater and filter
can cost over $300.
The cost of the actual fish can range from
$3-$100, or more!
How does the PET TRADE affect saltwater
fish?
It is important to be aware of where pet
fish come from. Wild-caught fish may be acquired by methods
that can have a negative impact on marine environments.
Tank-raised stock or captive-bred fish are much more environmentally
friendly pet purchases. Although it may cost more to purchase
these types of fish, they will be less likely to be in poor
health and you will have a better record of their history.
