Fire-bellied Toad

What type of HABITAT do Fire-bellied toads need?

Fire-bellied toads need an unheated, or weakly heated, 10 gallon aquarium with good ventilation. Ventilation can be created with a wire mesh lid, but it needs to be secured!

A water source and land access are necessary for these amphibians. The land area should take about 1/3 of the aquarium.

Fire-bellied toads need a 15-25 watt fluorescent bulb. They will use the land access as an area for basking. Plants can be an enriching aspect of their habitat, providing shelter and creating a more natural setting.

As for all wet pets a clean environment is very important. A set cleaning schedule can help to make sure that a proper care routine is managed.

What do Fire-bellied toads EAT and how often?

Fire-bellied toads eat LIVE food, such as crickets, waxworms and other small insects. Care-givers for these animals need to be prepared to deal with their diet requirements.

Herptile multivitamin powders and calcium supplements need to be added to their diet. These products are available in most pet stores or from retail pet food suppliers

Fire-bellied toads need to be fed 2-3 times a week. At each feed session, each frog requires 4-8 medium sized insects.

How long does a fire-bellied toad LIVE?

Fire-bellied toads can live for 10-20 years!

How much does it COST to keep a fire-bellied toad as a pet?

A fire-bellied toad costs approximately $10, but the aquarium and associated supplies can cost over $100!

Weekly food requirements cost about $5.

How does the PET TRADE affect the fire bellied toad?

Fire-bellied toads are commonly captive-bred. Prospective pet owners need to invest some time for finding a reputable breeder. Captive breeding programs limit the impact that the pet industry has on wild populations of animals, and also make it easier to monitor a pet’s medical history.
