Get Involved with our Volunteer Program

Recruitment is NOW OPEN! Read to learn how to join an award-winning volunteer team!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

Step 1:  Decide if you want to join the Vancouver Aquarium’s Volunteer Team.

Would you like to join a team of hundreds of volunteers committed to effecting the conservation of aquatic life through display and interpretation, education, research and direct action?

Step 2:  Make sure you are eligible.

All volunteers must fit these requirements to register for the Vancouver Aquarium Volunteer Program:

  • Be at least 14 years of age

  • Be able to attend the orientation session and all of the training sessions (5 weeks)

  • Have valid Medical Coverage/Insurance

  • Be fluent in English

  • Be eligible to volunteer in Canada

  • Be able to commit to a minimum of 6 months - one four (4) hour shift per week

  • Be able to navigate the Aquarium facility safely

  • Be able to purchase Volunteer t-shirt and Volunteer Manual ($40 cost)

Step 3:  Make the commitment

Our volunteers are required to make a minimum commitment of once a week for 6 months. Should you not be able to commit to that length of time, you can commit to reaching 100 hours of service in a shorter period of time yet this is not encouraged.

All volunteers must also attend our 21-hour training program which teaches about our animals, our style, our skills and our conservation programs. Training is held on Mondays and Wednesday nights in September.

Step 4: Find out when the next recruitment and training is being offered, then review the opportunities available.

We recruit three times a year, We will begin recruiting again on August 3rd for our fall volunteers. Starting on August 3rd and for the month of August, you can check the What's Available Now? page for a list of opportunities currently recruiting for volunteers.  Select an opportunity that interests you and that you are available for (one (1) shift per week is all that is required for most roles).

*Note that special Volunteer opportunities, such as our Marine Mammal Rescue Volunteer position, are available only in the summer and are restricted to Volunteers that have given 100 hours or 6 months of Volunteer time in another department and select Member recruits.  Click here to learn more about becoming a Member of the Aquarium.

Step 5:  Call us to sign up for the Information Session.

Found a role you like? When you have selected a program on the What's Available Now page that fits your interests and availability, call 604-659-3478 to register for the Information Session. Please note that we need to speak to you in person and we need to know which volunteer opportunity most interested you.  Our office is staffed 7 days a week between 10am and 4pm.

Step 6:  Attend training sessions.

If we are able to connect your personal interests to our organizational needs you will be invited to join us for the training sessions held on Monday and Wednesday evenings for seven (7) modules.  This comprehensive volunteer training will engage you in our galleries and animals, our style and our conservation programs so you are ready to act as an Aquarium ambassador.

Step 7:  Start Making a Difference!

Following your successful completion of the 21-hour training, you will begin volunteering once a week (or as the program requires) in one of the many exciting opportunities that are available now.
