May Pong and John Kim
|
John Kim has a great love for wildlife and conservation. John is
currently a student at Centennial School in Coquitlam, B.C. where
he has been nurturing his passion for the environment. Through a
variety of class projects, he has become a valued member of the
Como Watershed Group, and has participated in a number of re-vegetation
projects. On his own, he has been instigating a program in Coquitlam
for the installation of environmentally friendly "Grate Mates"
that filter storm drain water and capture oil and sediment. This
is in conjunction with the Pacific Community Enhancement Society
which has begun to pilot these devices in other communities. Forming
partnerships with many different community groups requires exceptional
communication skills. For John, this hasn't always been an easy
task. John Kim could not speak at all until he was eight years old
because he has a profound hearing disability. His first language
is Korean. Yet, he has also managed to master English, his second
language to become an invaluable leader in salmon conservation.
John is an active participant in the Centennial School Salmon Project,
which operates the volunteer Mossom Creek Hatchery in Port Moody.
He has excellent field experience netting large adult salmon for
their eggs and milt and he has also worked at salmon egg incubation
tasks in the hatchery on a weekly basis. He recently volunteer-taught
a salmon dissection demonstration to a large class of boisterous
grade 3 and 4's at a nearby elementary school.
