Early Fishing
Tradional fishing was, and often still is, carried out in some
of these ways:
Harpoons and spears - different types of harpoons
were used for different water types. Spears were used for catching
smaller salmon close at hand.
Gaffing - gaff hooks were used at fish traps and
weirs to haul out the catch. They were also used to rake salmon
from the botom of a river bed when the run was heavy.
Weirs - enclosures of stakes and netting were
placed in a river or stream to catch fish swimming upstream.
Trolling - bait was attached to a hook and a line
was fastened to the handle of a canoe paddle. The bait looks alive
as it moves through the water, when the salmon bites, the paddler
throws it into the canoe in one motion.
Basket traps or nets - usually made by women who
cut stems of tall stinging nettles and wove them together.
