Aquaculture

Aquaculture is a term that refers to spawning a species in captivity to produce large numbers for commercial use. Today, aquaculture provides between 20 and 25 percent of the 112 million metric tons of fish and shellfish that humans consume worldwide. The most common salmon species used in aquaculture are coho, chinook, Atlantic salmon, and rainbow trout.

Fish farming has been a hot topic in the news recently. Concerns with fish farming include:

- the potential for disease transmission between captive and wild salmon;

- the problem of interbreeding or genetic interaction.
