Field UpdatesNative Planting at Fraser River Park On October 26th 2008, the River Works team organized an invasive Himalayan blackberry removal and a native planting at one of our sites, Fraser River Park. We chose the site because a single stem of the highly invasive Japanese knotweed was growing there, and we have enough work on our hands removing knotweed without letting another patch start up! The area had been covered with blackberry but was recently mowed by parks staff. The timing was perfect to dig out the knotweed and the blackberry roots, and to replant the area with native shrubs that would not need to be mowed back each year. (Mowing can spread knotweed fragments from other sites in the park as the plant can grow from fragments of root or stem). Our team worked for three hours to dig out all the roots and plant in a selection of Nootka rose, salmonberry, thimbleberry, red elderberry, red-flowering current, black twinberry and Indian plum. What an improvement! Way to go guys! The bare ground is where the invasive blackberry had been growing and was mowed back.
