September Activity Notes:

September 20th – Shoreline Cleanup at Annacis Island

Be a part of this year’s TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup by joining River Works and Volunteer Services for our annual cleanup at Annacis Island. We’re expecting 40 volunteers in total and there will be food and prizes. This is a fun way to help clean up the Fraser River and prevent trash from ending up in the ocean and harming marine life. Friends and family are welcome, but please let us know ahead of time if you will be bringing anyone with you. Carpooling would be great – if you are able to offer other volunteers a ride please include this info when you sign up.

BC Hydro Salmon Stream Restoration Project

Many of you will remember our efforts removing invasive Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and Butterfly bush from the banks of the Salmon Stream last year, as well as planting cuttings from native shrubs. This area is a tangle of plants at this time of year, happily the majority is now native plants and some of our cuttings are doing well.

I would like to continue our efforts this September by offering a new volunteer experience for River Works volunteers. Volunteers can sign up for shifts during the weekdays and work in teams on their own.

When you arrive, we will get the equipment and walk down to the site together, where we will go over a plan for the site and for the day. I will then be returning to the office and the teams will be working for 3 hour shifts, and then returning to the office to report back and put away the equipment for the day. I am flexible as to the days and length of time, so if you have a day available that is not listed on the calendar, please let me know.

My goal is to try out this method of River Works volunteering so that I can offer more opportunities for volunteering during the times that I am needed in the office. I hope you can participate and that you will find this a positive experience – I will certainly be asking for feedback.

:) Sarah
