SHORELINE CLEANUP SURGES AHEAD AS RECORD NUMBER OF CANADIANS SIGN ON
The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup triples growth to become largest such event in the country
Vancouver and Toronto: As Canadians get set to hit the country's abundant beaches and waterways this summer, they're also signing up in record numbers for a program that has quickly grown into Canada's largest environmental cleanup campaign. Last year, more than 30,000 volunteers cleaned up shorelines across the country in the week-long campaign held each year in September.
From Tofino, BC to Halifax, NS, community members collected 64,988 kg of garbage from shorelines, lessening the impact of debris on aquatic animals. This year, sign up has already exceeded expectations. At last count, 15,941 Canadians have registered to clean up a shoreline in their community between September 10 and 18, essentially tripling the pace of a year ago.
"The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is one of the largest cleanup efforts on the planet," said Vancouver Aquarium President Dr. John Nightingale. "The Vancouver Aquarium is extremely proud to have founded this important environmental program. We continue to work hard to promote its growth across the country."
In 2004, Canadians cleaned up more than 630 local rivers, lakes and wetlands, and just over 1,100 km of shorelines d uring the week of September 11 - 19. Cleanups took place in every province and territory. This year, the cleanup will run September 10 - 18. Anyone can get involved. Drop in cleanups are being planned for major centres during that week.
The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup began as a community beach cleanup 11 years ago in Vancouver. The Vancouver Aquarium created the program to contribute to the International Coastal Cleanup held every September around the world. Within a few years, this cleanup initiative expanded across the country and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation became the major event sponsor, with the Vancouver Aquarium continuing to operate the program.
TD Friends of the Environment's increased support of the cleanup has helped the program to grow. This year, the event was renamed TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to honour the company's increased support.
All items collected during the cleanup are recorded and the data is returned to the Vancouver Aquarium for tallying. This information is then passed on to the Ocean Conservancy, which compiles worldwide results as part of the International Coastal Cleanup.
To register a cleanup or to volunteer, you must sign up by August 31, 2005. For more information, visit: www.vanaqua.org/cleanup .
