GOLDCORP MAKES $1 MILLION DONATION TO THE VANCOUVER AQUARIUM

Vancouver-based corporation establishes new Goldcorp Ocean Theatre

Vancouver, BC: Vancouver-based Goldcorp Inc., has made a $1-million donation to the Vancouver Aquarium to create the 170-seat Goldcorp Ocean Theatre in the Aquarium’s new ‘green’ building, Aquaquest – the Marilyn Blusson Learning Centre.

“We are pleased that our donation to establish the Goldcorp Ocean Theatre will support the Aquarium’s conservation mandate and provide a venue to communicate with the public in new and exciting ways,” said Kevin McArthur, Goldcorp President and Chief Executive Officer.

Goldcorp recognizes the importance of contributing to the communities in which it operates and provides support to a wide variety of initiatives and organizations through charitable donations and sponsorships. Goldcorp actively contributes in areas of education, health care, arts and community development.

“Goldcorp is an industry leader with headquarters in Vancouver. This makes Goldcorp a rare commodity in this city, and one who has shown vision and commitment to the community with its charitable support,” said Dr. John Nightingale, President, Vancouver Aquarium. “Their donation to the Aquarium for the Goldcorp Ocean Theatre will allow us to show our visitors and schoolchildren new, engaging stories from around the world. That new direction begins tonight with the premiere showing in Vancouver of the critically acclaimed feature Sharkwater.”

The Vancouver Aquarium, in cooperation with Goldcorp Inc. and distributor Alliance Atlantis, is hosting two exclusive showings of the multi-award winning documentary Sharkwater, which opens in theatres across Canada on March 23. Director Rob Stewart and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Founder Paul Watson will be attending tonight’s screening.

Sharkwater takes viewers into the most shark-rich waters of the world, exposing the plight of the world’s shark populations and the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Watson. Their unbelievable adventure together begins with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala. Through their experiences, the film compellingly highlights the need to conserve marine life.
