Ocean Wise Universities and Colleges

Compass Group Canada, the independently run University of British Columbia Food Services, University of British Columbia Robson Square, University of Winnipeg Diversity Food Services and Bamfield Marine Science Centre are partners of the Ocean Wise program.

As part of their commitment to the Ocean Wise program, the following universities and colleges are proud to be serving their students sustainable seafood options. 

Leading the Way to Healthy Oceans

Compass Group Canada fully implemented their new groundbreaking sustainable seafood guidelines in September 2008. As a first result, it is anticipated a quarter million pounds of unsustainable Atlantic cod will be replaced annually by more sustainably fished Alaskan Pollock across their 2,000 plus locations across Canada (from hospitals to entertainment centers!). In March 2009, Compass Group removed all farmed Atlantic salmon from order sheets. Compass Group Canada progressively continues to replace unsustainable seafood options with Ocean Wise alternatives.

The University of British Columbia Food Services implemented the Ocean Wise program in October 2008. From residence dining to on-campus catering, unsustainable salmon options have now been replaced with more sustainably caught wild Pacific salmon. The University of British Columbia progressively continues to replace unsustainable seafood options with Ocean Wise alternatives.

The University of British Columbia Robson Square's caterer, Peake of Catering joined the Ocean Wise program in 2009, removing unsustainable seafood items such as trawled lingcod and open-net pen farmed tilapia, and replacing these with Ocean Wise seafood. The University of British Columbia Robson Square's large selection of Ocean Wise highlighted sustainable seafood options include US closed containment farmed catfish, BC trap-caught sablefish and off-bottom cultured Qualicum Beach scallops amongst others. The University of Winnipeg Food Services initially implemented Ocean Wise in 2008. Chef Ben Kramer (former Executive Chef for Ocean Wise restaurant Dandelion Eatery) has joined forces with The University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation (UWCRC) and SEED Winnipeg to bring a new delivery model called The University of Winnipeg Diversity Food Services beginning Summer 2009. Following Ocean Wise program guidelines, Diversity Food Services have committed to serving sustainable wild Pacific salmon on the new menu. Bamfield Marine Science Centre recently implemented the Ocean Wise program and as of June 2009 committed to serving only sustainable seafood options to students. Bamfield Marine Science Centre is proudly 100% Ocean Wise! Learn more about Bamfield Marine Science Centre.
