These lesson plans below are designed to engage your students during your self-directed visit to the Vancouver Aquarium galleries. Several themes are covered for K-12, and all lessons complement the B.C. Ministry of Education’s prescribed learning outcomes.

Fur, Feathers, Skin or Scales? (K-2)

Students will be introduced to a variety of animal body coverings and the concept of grouping animals according to their body covering, fundamental to the scientific process of classification.

Classification Capers (1-2)

Students will use the lens of a scientist while exploring the Aquarium to consider which animals have similar characteristics and how we could group them together.

Amazing Invertebrates of B.C. (4-7)

Students will explore the diversity of marine invertebrates found on the B.C. Coast, identify their form and function, and connect specific invertebrates with their geographic habitat.

Aquarium Digital Discovery (4-7)

Students will explore the Vancouver Aquarium using digital photographs and observation skills to identify animal characteristics and interactions, including: adaptations, behaviours, survival skills, and predator/prey relationships.

The Art of Observation and Inquiry (4-7)

Students will develop and enhance the valuable skill of scientific inquiry. Through this process, students will investigate specific adaptations and behaviors to making inferences about an animal’s history and beyond.

Aquarium Photo Journaling (8-12)

Students will locate and photograph select scenarios at the Aquarium to determine the interaction of abiotic and biotic factors within an ecosystem, and exploring the interconnectedness of organisms within such ecosystems.

Sex in the Sea (9)

Students will discover the weird and wonderful modes of reproduction utilized by marine animals at the Vancouver Aquarium. Reproduction is essential for a species to survive, and can be asexual, sexual, or both.

Canadian Marine Treasures: Identify, Classify and Sustain (11-12)

Students will locate and classify select species, and consider how different species interact within ecosystems. Additionally, students will use the SeaChoice Seafood Guide to consider how consumer choices impact delicately balanced ecosystems.
