Ocean Art Contest

Attention Students! Are you an artist or photographer? Would you like to win a trip to Washington DC? Coastal America, in parternship with the Vancouver Aquarium, is hosting an ocean art contest for the 2011-2012 school year. 

The Vancouver Aquarium is a member of Coastal America’s Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centre (CELC) network and is running a regional ocean art contest in British Columbia.  Winners from the Vancouver Aquarium's regional ocean art contest will be eligible to win in the overall competition – a free trip to Washington DC – to view their art work in the Smithsonian Museum.

Art Work:

  • Type: Photograph or Original  (Illustration,  Painting, Drawing, etc.)
  • Size: 50 x 81cm and up to 6mm thick (flat, 2-dimensional work, no frames or glass, please)
  • Your name on the back or in the file name.

Art work was judged on its strong visual impact, artistic merit, and how clearly it communicates the Essential Principles of Ocean Literacy.

Essential Principles of Ocean Literacy:

  • The Earth has one big ocean with many features.
  • The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of the Earth.
  • The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.
  • The ocean makes Earth habitable.
  • The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.
  • The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected.
  • The ocean is largely unexplored.
