Aquaquest - the Marilyn Blusson Learning Centre

An environmentally friendly building in the making

We’re excited about our new concrete. Really!

Most of us at the Aquarium get excited about animals, but lately we’ve gained a new respect for green concrete.

To help cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, we’re using less cement to make our concrete and replacing it with fly ash, an industry waste product that would have ended up in the landfill.

Our concrete helps you breathe better and helps us meet Canada’s one tonne challenge.

Want the nitty gritty?

The production of one tonne of cement:

  • Uses about 2 tonnes of raw material

  • Requires approximately 4GJ of energy -- that’s equivalent to keeping your oven on at baking temperatures for 23 days

  • Produces approximately one tonne of CO2
