We want our walls to crawl with insects
Well, one of the outside walls anyway.
To be clear, we’re not talking about cockroaches or other household pests. We’re talking about the insects that are an important part of the food web – insects in our ecosystem that pollinate our crops and are food to animals like salmon and birds.
Not all wildlife needs to live in endless forests or expanses of open ocean. Some insects, for example, can live in cities if they can find a suitable spot.
The Aquarium’s new education centre features an insect-friendly “living wall”. This special wall will grow plants that will be watered with rainwater collected from the roof.
At home: Grow native plants – plants that grow naturally in your part of the world. Native plants require less work, less water, and provide a home for important local insects like honeybees and ladybugs. Ask your local garden shop for more information.
