Meet The Penguins

Waddle your way to the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre and meet the African penguins.

These charming little characters call the Vancouver Aquarium home. Come see them at Penguin Point, our penguin exhibit located between our Wild Coast and Canada’s Arctic exhibits.

Endangered Species

African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are endangered. North American zoos and aquariums, including the Vancouver Aquarium, are helping to save them. For example, all the penguins at the Vancouver Aquarium are not from South Africa, but have instead been bred at another aquarium through the Species Survival Plan program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). You can help too – visit the Penguin Point exhibit to find out how.

Where’s The Snow And Ice?

Contrary to popular belief, not all penguins live in the snow and ice of the Antarctic. The new home of these African penguins – Penguin Point – is inspired by Boulders Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, their natural environment. Explore this new exhibit to learn more about African penguins and how they measure up to the 17 other species of penguins. Find out where in the world penguins live and what makes a penguin an unlikely bird.
