Feature: Penguin Point

New penguin exhibit now open!

There’s A New Bird In Town

New penguin exhibit now open!

Waddle your way to the Vancouver Aquarium and meet the new African penguins.

These charming little characters are now calling the Vancouver Aquarium home. Come see them at Penguin Point, our brand new penguin exhibit located between our Wild Coast and Canada’s Arctic exhibits.

Penguins are birds, but they have lost the ability to fly. Discover how they have adapted to life at sea, and notice the difference between penguin wings that act like flippers and wings used for flight.  Look for distinctive African penguin behaviours. Is it preening, catching a breeze, resting or giving you THE stare?

Enjoy penguin-themed crafts and family activities. Our interpretive staff and Penguin Point volunteers will be available at the exhibit throughout the day to answer all of your penguin questions!

Penguin Naming Contest
Winners Announced

To welcome the new African penguins we decided to name them all after B.C. cities, towns and neighbourhoods. We asked for your suggestions along with pictures, videos or written submissions that highlighted your favorite B.C. hangout and the response was incredible! See the winning names on the penguin contest page.

Endangered Species

African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are endangered. North American zoos and aquariums, including the Vancouver Aquarium, are helping to save them. For example, all the new penguins at the Vancouver Aquarium are not from South Africa, but have instead been bred at another aquarium through the Species Survival Plan program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). You can help too – visit the Penguin Point exhibit to find out how.

Where’s The Snow And Ice?

Contrary to popular belief, not all penguins live in the snow and ice of the Antarctic. The new home of these African penguins – Penguin Point – is inspired by Boulders Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, their natural environment. Explore this new exhibit to learn more about African penguins and how they measure up to the 17 other species of penguins. Find out where in the world penguins live and what makes a penguin an unlikely bird.

Family Programming

Waddle like a penguin, dress like a penguin and fish like a penguin! Enjoy daily penguin-themed family programs complete with penguin songs, stories and games. Look out for our penguin puppets, which may also make an appearance!
