The Graham Amazon Gallery invites visitors to experience the extraordinary diversity and interdependence of aquatic and terrestrial life in the Amazon as they walk through a re-creation of South America’s tropical rainforest. This region has over 3,000 fish species and one-fifth of the world’s bird species—and many more animals are still being discovered. The gallery highlights some of these amazing species, as well as some of the threats they face.
Take a break from the temperate climate of British Columbia’s west coast and immerse yourself in the humidity and heat of one of the biggest ecosystems in the world. Watch out for scarlet ibises flying overhead, try to catch a glimpse of the well-camouflaged sloths or experience a thunderstorm. The Graham Amazon Gallery has plenty to see and do.
Meet the Amazon birds
The Amazon encompasses a huge area, but it’s rapidly losing ground. The animals that live there are losing their homes to development for cities and agriculture. Find out what you can do to help protect this vulnerable area, and learn about the conservation initiatives we’re taking as well For example, we’ve helped train locals in Brazil who are sustainably harvesting ornamental fish for aquariums. This harvesting provides local people with an economic reason to preserve rainforests rather than destroy them.
