12. Sea Lion Disentanglement
Delivered by: The Vancouver Aquarium
Bidding begins at: $2,000

Along the BC coast, it is estimated that 400 sea lions are entangled in garbage – discarded hard plastic packing straps and fishing gear and other human waste. The animals are often sighted with these nooses about their necks – cutting deeply into their flesh and causing severe injury and slow, painful deaths.

Dr. Martin Haulena, head veterinarian at the Vancouver Aquarium, has successfully pioneered a solution to this problem. Using a new anesthetic protocol, Dr. Haulena will dart a distressed sea lion from a distance and wait for the drugs to take effect. After about 12 minutes, Dr. Haulena and the team can move in and disentangle the animal and administer medical treatment. The innovative element of this procedure is the drug itself – even if an animal falls into the water, it will continue to breathe. After the medical treatment is done, Dr. Haulena will administer a reversing agent and the animal will wake up and swim away.

Dubbed by the Discovery Channel as “Canada’s most prolific sniper,” Dr. Haulena is the only veterinarian in the country to undertake this work, and one of only a few veterinarians in the world.

The team has a very high success rate, but each outing is expensive. It costs about $2,000 for every sea lion disentanglement.

We are looking to raise $40,000 for these important disentanglements. With your support, we can save up to 20 magnificent sea lions from a slow, and very painful death.
