Conserving Energy

We are always looking for ways to improve our energy efficiency both in the workplace and on the road.  Here are some of our related initiatives:

Community Challenge - July 2007

We challenged our visitors to walk, bike, blade, bus, or even swim to the Aquarium during the month of July.  One lucky green commuter will be drawn from the entries to win a Sea Lion Trainer Tour and a $250 Aquarium gift certificate on August 11th.

Vehicle Fleet

Since November 2005, Aquarium vehicles have been equipped with vehicle logs.  These logs track data that support decision makers in selecting vehicles to match our needs.  Since May 2004, our hybrid Toyota Prius has traveled over 31,000 kilometers.  By choosing a Prius, we are responsible for only half the CO2 emissions of an equivalent vehicle.

Monthly Green Commuter Draws

On average, 95 Aquarium staff cycle, walk, carpool, or take public transit to work “most of the time”.  One lucky green commuter each month is rewarded with a 2-zone bus pass courtesy of TransLink.

National Commuter Challenge

In 2006 and 2007, the Aquarium participated in the National Commuter Challenge. In 2006, the Aquarium saved 10,649.20km during the week of June 4-10th.  Based on kilometers saved, we ranked 2nd in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland region, beat only by Health Canada Vancouver.  Our 78 participants saved 58.59g of PM 2.5, 14,156.41g of NOx, and 2,916.27kg of eCO2.  In 2007, Aquarium workers saved 5,387 km during this challenge and Bike to Work Week.

TransLink Employer Pass Program

Currently over 25 staff and volunteers save time and money with the TransLink Employer Pass Program when compared to purchasing monthly farecards.  This is one way that the Aquarium supports their staff in green commuting.

Vancouver's Anti Idling Bylaw

On July 18, 2006, the City of Vancouver adopted an anti-idling bylaw.  We feel it is not only important to have our drivers abide by this law, but also to remind those who do business with us to do the same.

Aquaquest

Our new facility was constructed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED Standards).  Read about what makes this buildling energy efficient.
