Topical-minded educators
often face difficulties locating resources to address complex environmental
issues like climate change and declining fish stocks. However,
the lack of resources should not discourage teachers to approach
environmental topics in the classroom. Conservation is a subject
that can be integrated into many parts of the curriculum.
The Vancouver Aquarium is developing
a resource for educators that will give teachers and students the
opportunity to actively participate in the conservation of leatherback
and other sea turtles through a unique interdisciplinary program.
Features
of the Program:
- An Educator’s guide, including interdisciplinary lesson
plans that are fully compatible with the B.C. Ministry of Education
Curriculum goals and objectives
- Specifically designed for Grades 4-7, although many activities
are adaptable to other age groups
- Hands-on, interactive activities introduce conservation as an
issue students can bring into their daily lives.
- Covers a variety of topics including pollution, endangered species,
and habitats through a range of disciplines
- Participation in sea turtle research and conservation
programs
