Tools, Techniques and Tricks to Improve Your Environmental Education Program: A professional development workshop for marine and aquatic educators.

Workshop Leader: Sue Staniforth

Hosted by the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators’ Association (NAME BC)

Wednesday March 10, 2010 from 2 - 5 pm at Clayoquot Field Station at Tofino Botanical Gardens

Evaluation information is an important tool for program funding and decision-making, organizational learning, accountability and program management and improvement. This workshop will examine tools and strategies for developing evaluation programs that work for us as educators in both formal and non-formal settings. We will also explore several recent resources that support educational program evaluation, and apply them to participant programs

Participants will…

  • Get an overview of the field of evaluation research including qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and the “whys and hows” of evaluation as it applies to environmental and marine education,
  • Review some tools and measurement instruments that are useful for educational evaluation, and
  • Work through resources, activities and program materials that will help you plan an evaluation of your own.

Sue Staniforth brings to her work over 25 years of experience as an evaluation consultant, educator, writer and capacity-building specialist for non-profit groups at national, regional and international levels. Currently she is working as the primary evaluator for Green Street/ Ma Rue Verte, a national, bilingual environmental education initiative funded by the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation. (www.green-street.ca). Sue has been working for nine years with the Green Street network, consisting of over 35 non-governmental organizations and community groups nation-wide. She is also directing two long-term evaluations of networks and initiatives that support a wide variety of community organizations in Alberta and BC.

Sue was privileged to be chosen as part of a unique national group of consultants who participated in an intensive two-year evaluation professional development experience, led by internationally recognized evaluation expert Michael Quinn Patton, as part of the McConnell Foundation’s Sustaining Social Innovations program (2004 – 2007). Sue is also the co-author of a widely distributed evaluation manual for non-profit groups called Measuring the Success of Environmental Education Programs.

Teacher Resources

Have you ever wondered where to begin to inspire your class?  Start by taking them on a field trip.  Children have been visiting the Vancouver Aquarium and participating in our programs since we opened in 1956.  Three generations of children have been engaged, amazed and inspired by aquatic animals and their habitats through close encounters with fascinating creatures and hands-on, experiential programs.

Our school programs support the Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the BC Ministry of Education's Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs) and follow the Aquarium's conservation mission.

We want your experience with the Vancouver Aquarium to be a positive one, so we've put together a few resources for you.  Some of these will help you prepare for a field trip to the Aquarium and others will help you plan activities and lessons in your classroom.

If you would like to contribute a resource you've created for use at the Aquarium, or give feedback on one of our resources, you can email jennifer.kennedy@vanaqua.org.
