Indicators
Participants in the workshops came up with the following indicators as useful guidelines for detecting possible depredation by whales:
- Presence of cetaceans
- Observed depredation (surface observations)
- Evidence of damaged fish on the line
- Evidence of damaged gear
- Gear/cetacean interactions (tugging, entanglement)
- Bare hooks
- Cetacean behavior (diving, location in relation to vessel and gear)
