Indicators

Participants in the workshops came up with the following indicators as useful guidelines for detecting possible depredation by whales:

• Presence of cetaceans
• Observed depredation (surface observations)
• Evidence of damaged fish on the line
• Evidence of damaged gear
• Gear/cetacean interactions (tugging, entanglement)
• Bare hooks
• Cetacean behavior (diving, location in relation to vessel and gear)
