Solving the Puzzle of the Disappearing Steller Sea Lions

The Problem

Since 1980, the world population of Steller sea lions has dropped from more than 300,000 animals to less than 100,000, and it's still declining.

The Consortium

The North Pacific Universities Marine Mammal Research Consortium, made up of four participating institutions and the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, was formed "to undertake a long term program of research on the relationships between fisheries and marine mammals in the North Pacific Ocean and Eastern Bering Sea." (quoted in 1995-1996 Consortium Annual Report)

The Research

Six Steller sea lions from the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre are involved in an integral part of the Consortium's project, participating in a comprehensive research study designed to answer critical questions about diet, food intake, growth and metabolism of Steller sea lions.
