3. It Takes a Community to Raise a Fish

Individuals do make a difference when it comes to habitat restoration and maintaining stream health. Once you're interested in stream stewardship the next step is finding out how to take care of the streams near your home. There are a number of community groups working to protect stream habitat in the lower mainland: Streamkeepers is an organization that provides detailed stream care training that gives you the information and skills you need to do ongoing stream restoration, maintenance and quality testing. You can get more information about Streamkeepers, upcoming courses, and program costs at their Web site. Riverworks is a Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre aquatic habitat stewardship program that organizes river restoration work at various sites along the Fraser River. Free training for volunteers occurs on site during Riverworks activities. To find out more about volunteering opportunities check out our website at www.riverworks.org.
