4. An Aerial View

The BC Hydro Salmon Stream Project in Stanley Park is a demonstration stream running from the Aquarium to the Seawall at Coal Harbour. This is not a restoration of an existing stream but rather the creation of a stream that highlights restoration projects in the province through interactive education programs. Physically, the stream is made up of two sections. One is a re-circulated freshwater portion that runs from the Children's Zoo to a log jam just above the Alcan Salmon Pool and the other is a saltwater portion that consists of the Alcan Salmon Pool and a series of stream pools that run to Coal Harbour. A beach pump is used to pump saltwater from the ocean to create the flow of the lower stream. Each year since 1998, we have released Pink, Coho and Chum smolts at the mouth of the stream. Since November 2001, coho have been returning successfully. Prior to release, the smolts are imprinted with morpholine. Morpholine is an organic molecule that salmon can smell at very low concentrations. The salmon will use this scent to find their way back to the stream here in Stanley Park.
