This
footage of the birth of approximately 25 green anaconda
was filmed at the Vancouver Aquarium. These snakes
are viviparous - they give birth to live
young instead of laying eggs. Females can give birth
to 4-82 young, with the litter size increasing as
the females get larger. First-time mothers have
average litter sizes of 10-30 young.
Scientific Name:
Eunectes murinus
Geographical Range: Found throughout
tropical South America. Most commonly seen east
of the Andes, mainly through the Amazon and Orinoco
river basins, from Colombia and Venezuela to Northern
Bolivia and South Central Brazil.
Habitat: Swamps and slow moving rivers.
They will also hang from tree branches or along
riverbanks to sun themselves and ambush prey.
Diet: Aquatic and amphibious animals, including
different types of mammals, fish, caiman, birds
and turtles. The snakes at the Vancouver Aquarium
Marine Science Centre are fed a diet of primarily
rodents (rats and mice).
