Why We Created The Ocean Wise Seafood Program

It may seem unbelievable, but 90 percent of all large fishes have been caught. Due to unsustainable fishing practices, we're now fishing the world's last 10 percent of shark, swordfish and tuna. Unsustainable fishing practices pose the biggest threat to our oceans, where more and more species face extinction in the near future. The Ocean Wise seafood program was created to give you the power to change a marketplace. The Ocean Wise label on a seafood item lets you know that an item has been harvested responsibly.

The Problems Oceans
Are Facing

Environmental issues concerning seafood are many and varied. They include:

Overfishing: Removing too many fish from the sea and not leaving enough to re-populate in time for the next catch.

Bycatch: Removing animals from the ocean that were not intended to be part of the catch, such as sea turtles, dolphins, seabirds and sponges.

Habitat Degradation: Fishing or producing seafood in areas that affect the quality of water, reefs and other ocean habitats that then negatively impacts sea life.

Look For The Logo

Sustainable seafood options are highlighted on restaurant menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, enabling consumers to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. The Ocean Wise logo next to a menu or seafood item is an assurance that the item is a good choice for keeping ocean life healthy and abundant for generations to come.
