Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise works directly with local restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to ensure that they have the most current scientific information and help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions.
With over 600 partners across Canada, Ocean Wise makes it easy for consumers to make sustainable seafood choices that ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.

The Ocean Wise Cookbook 2
Following up on the success of the Ocean Wise Cook Book published in 2010, freelance writer Jane Mundy has compiled recipes for a second Ocean Wise cookbook, available in stores and online. The Ocean Wise Cookbook 2 features recipes from chefs across Canada, including Ned Bell of YEW restaurant + bar, Warren Barr of the Wickaninnish Inn and Jason Bangerter of Langdon Hall.
Why We Created Ocean Wise
It may seem unbelievable, but 90 percent of all large fishes have been caught. Due to unsustainable fishing practices, we're now fishing the world's last 10 percent of shark, swordfish and tuna. Unsustainable fishing practices pose the biggest threat to our oceans, where more and more species face extinction in the near future. Ocean Wise was created to give you the power to change a marketplace. The Ocean Wise label on a seafood item lets you know that an item has been harvested responsibly.
The Problems Oceans Are Facing
Environmental issues concerning seafood are many and varied. They include:
Overfishing: Removing too many fish from the sea and not leaving enough to re-populate in time for the next catch.
Bycatch: Removing animals from the ocean that were not intended to be part of the catch, such as sea turtles, dolphins, seabirds and sponges.
Habitat Degradation: Fishing or producing seafood in areas that affect the quality of water, reefs and other ocean habitats that then negatively impacts sea life.

Sustainable seafood options are highlighted on restaurant menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, enabling consumers to make environmentally friendly seafood choices.
