Extinction Is A Real Possibility

Ocean Wise™ And Dig In

Here at the Vancouver Aquarium, we are very excited to be celebrating Ocean Wise month throughout the entire month of November. It’s not only the perfect time to celebrate and enjoy sustainable seafood, but it also provides a great opportunity to get our Ocean Wise partners involved in helping to educate consumers on why it’s so important to make smart choices for our oceans.

Our 500+ partners are celebrating across Canada from coast to coast.  See what restaurants and retailers in your area are doing to join in on the celebration and feature their Ocean Wise seafood options throughout November. Read more on OceanWise.ca.

Why We Created
Ocean Wise

It may seem unbelievable, but 90 percent of all large fishes have been caught. Due to unsustainable fishing practices, we're now fishing the world's last 10 percent of shark, swordfish and tuna. Unsustainable fishing practices pose the biggest threat to our oceans, where more and more species face extinction in the near future. Ocean Wise was created to give you the power to change a marketplace. The Ocean Wise label on a seafood item lets you know that an item has been harvested responsibly.

About Ocean Wise

Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise works directly with local restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers to ensure that they have the most current scientific information and help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions.

The Problems Oceans
Are Facing

Environmental issues concerning seafood are many and varied. They include:

Overfishing: Removing too many fish from the sea and not leaving enough to re-populate in time for the next catch.

Bycatch: Removing animals from the ocean that were not intended to be part of the catch, such as sea turtles, dolphins, seabirds and sponges.

Habitat Degradation: Fishing or producing seafood in areas that affect the quality of water, reefs and other ocean habitats that then negatively impacts sea life.

Look For The Logo

Sustainable seafood options are highlighted on restaurant menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, enabling consumers to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. The Ocean Wise logo next to a menu or seafood item is an assurance that the item is a good choice for keeping ocean life healthy and abundant for generations to come.
